World renowned Canadian photographer Freeman Patterson will be presenting a one day workshop on visual design. Freeman is an inspirational speaker and an amazing teacher. His talks are richly illustrated with his photographs, and he will also be showing some of his audio-visual presentations of slides set to music. Seeing his beautiful slides projected on the screen is almost reason enough to attend!
He will be speaking in the morning about the building blocks of visual design: line, shape, perspective and texture. In the afternoon he will speak about combining those building blocks using the principles of visual design: balance, rhythm, proportion and dominance. His presentations are geared to photographers, but his talks are richly illustrated with his photographs and the content will be of interest and value to all visual artists who work in two dimensions. (There is no need to bring your camera as the workshop will not be hands-on.) Freeman also speaks very motivationally about our need for creativity and our passion to make photographsMore information:
For the past thirty five years Freeman has been leading week-long workshops near his home in New Brunswick, and since 1984 in South Africa. At the Sarnia workshop he will present some of the core material from those workshops, with presentations on the building blocks of visual design, the principles of visual design and on creativity. These presentations will be generously illustrated with his wonderful photographs. In addition he will be presenting several of his inspiring audio-visual slide presentations. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to learn personally from the photographer, writer and teacher who has influenced generations of Canadian photographers.
Freeman Patterson’s first book “Photography for the Joy of It” was published in 1977. Since then he was written an additional three instructional books: “Photography of Natural Things”, “Photography and the Art of Seeing”, “Photographing the World Around You -- A Visual Design Workshop” and co-authored “Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image” with André Gallant. All of these books have been reissued in new fully revised editions for digital photography. Most recently, “Photography for the Joy of It” has been reissued in a 30th anniversary edition, co-authored with André Gallant. Signed copies of these five great instructional books will be on sale at the workshop.
